When I first started to work at eBay, I was responsible for supporting and pushing the SiteBuilder tool forward. This involved creating new components and supporting site builds by various teams across the company, in the capacity of a designer. The tool was initially based off of a $100 application that was progressively supercharged by the Hub team's efforts, and subsequently ran into some growing pains.
Over time, the SiteBuilder platform became populated with so many components (approx 80) stacked on top of each other in the sidebar, that there was a problem with navigating and identifying the components.
I created a design to section different components into dropdowns sections so that they can be more easily identified and the endless scroll would be avoided. Improve the UI so that it reflected the recent design system changes within eBay. The page canvas/editing area was separated more clearly from other elements on the page. Also a full screen editing mode was added to make more screen real estate available when editing content. The component thumbnails were reworked so they were larger and clearer, and provided more visual information. Tooltips were added on hover which provided a component description.
After much pleading for engineering resources to build this design out, I decided to try and code it up myself, and my manager was kind enough to allow me the time to do it.. The redesign was well received by various product users and stakeholders. It created an improved user experience by improving component navigation and identification, and a more modern and thoughtful UI design.
